20 years of Planet Mu in 10 minutes
As the year-long celebrations of Planet Mu’s 20th anniversary draw to a close, The Vinyl Factory have released a short documentary and potted history about the British label and its founder Mike Paradinas aka µ-Ziq. Planet Mu: µ20 (The Documentary) takes a quick look back at the past twenty years of the label particularly since Mike Paradinas split off from Virgin Records in ’97 to go independent with nothing but his obsession for and, according to Rory Gibb, the author of µ20, his ‘personal viewpoint of electronic music as it’s evolved’.
The homegrown label has much to reflect on and to celebrate having nurtured many respected producers including Aphex Twin, Floating Points and Venetian Snares and as The Vinyl Factory write, “it’s truly remarkable that Planet Mu has continued to break boundaries without the structure and budget and big-hitting artists enjoyed by other electronic indies of its standing.”
Mike Paradinas says, “it might be around in some form or another as long as I’m alive. I hope I live for another 20 years, yeah.” We hope so too.
