5 minutes with… Glass City Vice

Glass City Vice have certainly made a name for themselves since their formation back in 2011.

Hailing from Brighton the band tasted early success with their debut EP ‘No Direction’ receiving praise form both fans and critics. The Success continued with their second EP ‘Limelight,’ which saw them gain an increasing amount of media attention and garnered further live shows supporting the likes of Xcerts and Rival Schools. Third EP ‘Waves’ caught the attention of XYZ Magazine. 

Glass City Vice have been praised for their catchy hooks, memorable lyrics and most notably the band’s competence as songwriters, highlighting true attention to detail in regards to both their individual parts and the songs as a whole. Their hard work ethic and patience with crafting their sound has rewarded them greatly.

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?

Not too bad thanks! Enjoying a rare day off and writing some music.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

I don’t like to pigeon-hole our sound too much, but we’re all agreed the music we make falls under the different shades of Alt-Rock.

What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?

This is always going to be tough, and they could change day to day but these 5 are pretty influential to us.

Pixies – Surfer Rosa

What other artists do you really like at the moment and why?

I’d always use this question as a chance to give some newer or smaller bands some exposure.
Bands like The Bronze Medal, Morain and Big Society are make some exciting music at the moment.

What are some of the key pieces of gear you use to write your tracks?

We tend to keep it quite simple and try to keep the focus on songwriting, but recently we’ve recorded with Max Heyes and he’s introduced us to some odd sounds in the production stages, you’ll have to wait and see!

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?

We played with Rival Schools not so long ago, that was a big nostalgia trip for us and a great opportunity to play to a huge audience.

What’s the worst gig you have ever done and why?

There’s not really a “worst gig” in my opinion. Sure we’ve played to nearly empty rooms, but thats just part of working hard!

Classical

Hugely important, and something I always say I should explore more.

Blues

Again, historically, I guess you could say this is hugely important in the formation of the music that we as a band play now.

Soul

Culturally, this is some seriously relevant stuff that gave way to many other genre’s. Can’t say I listen to too much though.

Hip-Hop

Love it. Older US stuff from the early 90’s has a certain charm about it, and I’m really into more underground UK stuff too.

Folk

Gotta respect the greats here, though I can’t get into the traditional celtic stuff!

Dubstep

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects, DJ mixes or collaborations in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

Firstly, our video for our next single “Landslide” will be out very soon, along with that we’ve got a brand new EP recorded with Max Heyes coming out in the new year which we’re extremely proud of, its a real departure from our previous material and we can’t wait for people to hear it.

We’ll also be announcing some exciting intimate shows in the new year, with some tour news and more releases on the way!

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?

Attempting to be creative in some other capacity.
