5 minutes with… Little Ghosts

Little Ghosts are due to release their debut EP ‘Carnivore’ on the 11th, after eighteen-month of music writing, touching on the life experiences of crazy relationships, strippers and church girls gone bad. We managed to grab few minutes with Johnny Ghosts to know more about the band and what’s behind their sound.

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?

Greetings. Just finished training (Muay Thai) and now in a dark room making loud noises with my guitar.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

Simple straight forward indie/rock. Early Kings of Leon meets Black Rebel Motorcycle Clubs with a hint of Bloc Party, all under the umbrella of Led Zeppelin.

What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?

Kings of Leon – Youth and Young Manhood.
Bloc Party – Silent Alarm
The XX – XX
The White Stripes – Elephant
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Greatest Hits.

What other artists do you really like at the moment and why?

Etta Bond & Raf Riley. I’ve known Etta for a while so it’s been amazing watching her evolve, and continue to grow, in to the artist she is today. The second she started working with the genius that is Raf Riley they created a sound that just had me at hello.
The Weeks – They just recently signed to Kings of Leon’s label Serpents and Snakes. They just have that raw Nashville southern country/rock sound and attitude. Pretty much what K.O.L had before they went all boy band.
Snoh Aalegra – largely because she’s a stud and her music is magisterial

What are some of the key pieces of gear you use to write your tracks?

Acoustic Guitar, iPhone for lyrics, a bottle of Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey and a generous amount of Cannabis mainly with a high Sativa ratio.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?

It was on outdoor festival for MTV in a city called Novorossiysk in Russia. Standing in front of 35,000 people with a war ship as your backdrop and fireworks going off. Was the first time i felt that the rock n roll life was for me.

What’s the worst gig you have ever done and why?

I’ve never had a bad gig. I’ve performed gigs in which you were the only people there, but then i enjoyed them as they were like a glorified rehearsal session and you can just rock out and have a laugh.

What are your thoughts on the following music genres?

Classicall
Very intricate in terms of composition. Incredibly emotive and beautiful.
Blues
The root of all rock n roll. When i found out about Jack White i got to appreciate Led Zeppelin more, from there i learnt more about the blues and such artists as Son House and Robert Johnson. Blues music is very raw and true.
Soul
If it weren’t for such Motown soul artists such as Marvin Gaye or The Temptations I wouldn’t of even contemplated becoming a signer let alone start my own band. Some of my most favourite artists are soul singers.
Hip-Hop
More of a fan of old-school Hip Hop such as early Bones Thugs n Harmony, Cypress Hill and N.W.A. Back then it had a lot of heart and passion. They stood for something and especially with N.W.A it was a movement. Not like today with Drake and his moist PG rated trash.
Folk
I guess it’s safe to say when you talk about Folk music one of if not the most popular artist that comes to mind is Bob Dylan, and if it weren’t for him i wouldn’t of listened to many folk songs. I admire the lyrical content in Folk music. It’s a sort of “stick it to the man” type of genre. Like blues it’s very raw and honest music.

Sounds like a bunch of Transformers Farting.
