Anish Kumar – Mayfield Blues
Rising UK electronic music producer Anish Kumar has house music encoded into his DNA. The four on the floor pulse of it all courses through his blood, and his instincts for the style have seen Kumar release some of the most interesting and undeniably funky house tracks over the past three years. Kumar approaches the formula from a unique point of view, embracing his influences both sonic and cultural, connecting the dots between vintage Bollywood, Indian disco, and UK funky.
Mayfield Blues shows these various facets of Kumar on one stellar dance track. Opening as a conga-laden, keyboard licked funk-house track, Mayfield Blues evolves organically in unexpected directions. There’s a middle eight of what sounds like a looped Bollywood sample, replete with swirling strings and thunderous dhol crashes, building a breath-snatching sense of drama and tension before slinking back into the track’s get down groove. It’s a stunning journey through a whole mood board of textures, sounds, and ideas, pulled together by Kumar into some of the most naturally flowing and infectious house music coming out of the contemporary scene.
