Berghain’s Sven Marquardt will open an exhibition at New York Art Week
Sven Marquardt, the infamous bouncer of Berghain, will host a photography exhibition during New York Art Week titled DISTURBING BEAUTY. The event will showcase Marquardt’s selection of photographs taken in East Berlin during the ’80s before the Berlin Wall’s fall. The exhibition will be held from May 18th to 21st in ArtsDistrict Brooklyn. The opening party, in collaboration with Teksupport, will feature sets from Joris Voorn and Akua.
Marquardt said that club culture has influenced his life as a photographer and a curator for over 30 years. He explained that after putting his camera aside in the late ’90s, he rediscovered it as a means of expression for his attitude towards life. Berlin has always been a source of inspiration for his pictures and projects.
Marquardt has previously exhibited at venues such as Berlin’s Galerie Deschler, Sydney’s aMBUSH Gallery, and New York’s C24 Gallery. In addition, he recently appeared as Klaus, a bouncer, in the movie John Wick: Chapter 4.
