Beyoncé submits Renaissance to Dance / Electronic categories at Grammys

Beyoncé has submitted to the Dance / Electronic categories at The Grammys for the first time in her career. The singer has reportedly submitted her hit single, Break My Soul into the ring for Best Dance/Electronic Recording while her album Renaissance has been submitted in the Best Dance / Electronic Album category. The 28 time Grammy winner has also submitted to Song Of Year, Record of The Year, and Best Album categories respectively. 

Break My Soul, a club focussed track, samples Robin. S’s iconic house essential, Show Me Love. Renaissance is also significantly dance music heavy compared to Beyoncé’s previous projects. To achieve the sound of the album, the singer recruited a roster of heavyweight electronic producers including Honey Dijon, Green Velvet, and A.G. Cook. 

The Dance / Electronic categories at the Grammys have always been a contentious space, with many coming to criticise the presence of popstars and pop albums in the album category. Though initially conceived as a branch of the Grammy’s pop fields, many believe that the Dance / Electronic categories should be a space reserved for electronic music artists who are otherwise unable to submit to the pop and general fields of the awards. 

Australian trio Rüfüs Du Sol currently hold the title for Best Dance / Electronic Recording for their track Alive, while South African producer Black Coffee holds Best Dance / Electronic Album for his work, Subconsciously.
