British Chill legends Kinobe venture into whimsical psychedelia with their latest album ‘Out Of The Blue’
British chill band Kinobe released their fifth studio album, Out of The Blue, on August 9th, 2024 via the SGKL imprint. This follows the release of ‘Lucky Stars’, which received radio support from NPR Music, KEXP, and SBS Chill. The single and album were conceived at Kinobe HQ, a beautiful beach house in Western Australia overlooking the Indian Ocean, and mastered by the legendary Frank Arkwright (Blur, New Order, Coldplay, Oasis and many more) at Abbey Road.
Formed in west London in 1998 by childhood friends Julius Waters and Mark “Blackie” Blackburn, originally hails from the UK and is now based in Perth, Australia. Kinobe became the quintessential downtempo group with the 2000 release of their Engelbert Humperdinck-sampling single ‘Slip Into Something More Comfortable’, which became an essential on every beach bar playlist as well as being licensed for innumerable compilations, soundtracks, and TV commercials. Racking up over 50 million streams on Spotify alone, Kinobe has previously earned support from tastemaker publications CLASH Mag, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Sputnik Music, and Hot Press Magazine. Kinobe. Kinobe’s sound, inspired by diverse influences from Nelson Riddle to Canned Heat, has been likened to the lounge styles of Air, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Groove Armada, and Thievery Corporation.
In Out of The Blue, Kinobe pushes the boundaries of their signature lounge chill, infusing it with a touch of psychedelic flair. The standout track, ‘It’s Only A Dream,’ begins with sweeping cinematic strings and quickly transitions into a groove so light that listeners might feel as if they’re floating on clouds. The whimsical strings, a surfy guitar, minimal synth bass, and enticing melodies guide the listener through a surreal experience, occasionally highlighted by smooth vocals that offer psychedelic musings, including the memorable line: “But remember cowboy, it’s only a dream.” This track encapsulates the lush, buoyant essence of the album, promising an enchanting journey reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, blending the warm nostalgia of the sixties with a modern twist.
