Caroline Polachek – Sunset
Caroline Polachek is a siren. There’s no other way to explain it, really. The former Chairlift frontwoman turned alt-pop star has an uncanny ability to tap into the essence of human experience through hooks and melodic gymnastics so enchanting, they feel mythical. From the impeccably crafted pop of So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings to the pagan poetry of Billions, Polachek has continued to single herself out as a distinct and impressive voice in contemporary pop.

The follow up to her critically acclaimed breakthrough Pang has been hotly anticipated for some time now, and aside from a handful of contrasting singles, little is known about Polachek’s next album. Sunset is the latest of this batch, and like its predecessors, it’s entirely its own thing. Produced by Sega Bodega, for this diorama, Polachek takes us into the sun drenched streets of Barcelona in search of a lost lover. It’s a late summer love song ripe with lush Spanish guitar and flamenco handclaps, full of romance and touches of camp, like Polachek’s vibrato laced ‘ooos’ in the song’s second act.
At this point, it’s really unclear whether any of the singles from Bunny Is A Rider up to Sunset will form part of Polachek’s next project. Regardless, she’s continued to give us fantastical worlds to slip into for a few minutes, each one stunningly realised and quite unlike anything else in pop right now.
