Gorillaz mastermind Damon Albarn shared this week that he already has compiled a great deal of material for the Gorillaz’s next album, but that doesn’t mean that any releases are on the horizon just yet. The artist has been known to take his time with releasing new material, waiting seven years before releasing 2017’s ‘Humanz’, which followed on from the release of both ‘Plastic Beach’ and ‘The Fall’ in 2010.

Albarn spoke with Austrian radio station Radio FM4 and explained that, even though he has the material, the album has yet to be recorded and he’s not going to release it any time soon. If a release happens, it’ll be after Albarn’s long-rumoured reunion with The Good, The Bad & The Queen, his supergroup with The Clash’s Paul Simonon, The Verve’s Simon Tong and Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. Albarn explained that, “I have another one [Gorillaz album] as well, but I know I’m not going to be allowed to even think about recording or putting it out this year… In October, after I play in America, I’ll be starting The Good, The Bad & The Queen again… I don’t know. It’s there. If I get the time, or if anyone wants it, it’s there.

A perfectionist, Albarn has also previously revealed that he is often unsatisfied with his work. Remarking on his vocals in the most recent Gorillaz album, ‘The Now Now’, released earlier this year, Albarn said, “My voice has gotten a lot better. A lot richer and deeper, I think. [But] I wouldn’t say I like it. I’m permanently dissatisfied, period, with what I do. I have little glimpses when I’m making something, like, ‘Ahhhh, I love this! This is great!’ And then that moment ends and I just sort of return to, ‘Am I ever really gonna find — I don’t know what it is, but am I ever really gonna find it?’ I don’t know.
