Deezer combats AI generated ‘deepfakes’ with AI based detection technology
Popular music streaming service Deezer has taken a significant step in combating the proliferation of AI-generated music on its platform by introducing advanced technology that can identify and remove such tracks. In an effort to combat the presence of illegal and fraudulent content, Deezer has developed special software designed to detect ‘deepfaked’ songs, according to the BBC.
The motivation behind this move comes in response to a recent surge in the production of music using artificial intelligence. One prominent example was a collaboration between Drake and The Weeknd that utilised AI-generated vocals of both artists. The song gained widespread attention but was subsequently removed from streaming services following a petition by Universal Music in April.
Deezer’s software will tag ‘deepfaked’ vocals, allowing for easy identification and subsequent notification of labels, artists, and rights holders. By taking this proactive approach, the platform aims to eliminate a substantial number of fraudulent artists and fabricated streams on a daily basis.
Jeronimo Folgueira, the CEO of Deezer, expressed the need for action. “We need to take a stand now,” he said. “We are at a pivotal moment in music.”
Though in opposition of AI use in mimicking recording artists, Deezer’s new detection technology is, ironically, AI based. Folgueira stressed that this represented a “good use” of AI, and elaborated on his hopes for the future of the technology. “For example, personally, I would love to see AI bring Whitney Houston back to life, and come up with amazing new tracks with her voice,” he told the BBC. “But we as an industry need to make sure that AI is used in the right way, that it complies with the law and intellectual property rights and that artists get compensated fairly.”
In a related incident, Spotify recently reinstated tracks from an AI music generator called Boomy, following allegations of “fake streaming.” Boomy claimed to create original songs using AI technology, but Spotify suspended its content due to suspicions of stream manipulation.
While some artists, like Grimes, have embraced the use of AI to create music and even developed software to mimic their own voices, Deezer’s new technology reflects a determination to ensure that AI is used appropriately, respecting legal and ethical boundaries while guaranteeing fair compensation for artists.
