DOSS – Jumpin’
DOSS has always let her music speak for itself. Infamously elusive, she set the internet alight last year with tastemakers and underground club communities all in a quandary over the identity of the producer who dropped the sticky hyperpop-adjacent banger Look in April. That song would land a spot on Pitchfork’s Best Of year end list, and was followed by the EP 4 New Hit Songs, reportedly her first in several years and a stint on Lady Gaga’s bonkers Dawn of Chromatica remix album. Suddenly, DOSS was the moment. It’s easy to see why; her music, propulsive formulations of bubblegum, house, and bass is designed to make your body move accordingly. For those asking “who is DOSS?” Perhaps the answer is simply, “DOSS is the dancefloor.”

Jumpin’, her first single of the year, continues her modus operandi of creating massive, scintillating left-field club music rooted in underground dance music. Opening with an echoing “ah ah ah’s” that bounce off each other atop a steady pulse, Jumpin’s opening arguments locate its influences somewhere in 90s house territory. But then a looped series of hi-hats build the atmosphere, until Jumpin’ jumps off and drops into a techno beat and dirty, heavy bass that threatens to blow your subwoofer. A spoken word chorus, a signature that DOSS has established for herself, mingles with Jumpin’s house vocals as the track masterfully blends its references and stylistic influences. Yet just when you think you’ve figured Jumpin’ out, DOSS takes it further in its final minute. The strobing bassline becomes grittier and harder, the beat a bit more urgent. A rubbery arpeggio pulled from the soundtrack of a 90’s catwalk arrives, twisting about for three bars of fabulousness before receding back into the waves of DOSS’s abysmal bass.
Jumpin’ is pretty excellent; an exercise in energy and a synthesis of elements from different styles that are typically used to induce a sense of euphoria. It’s the mixing of peak time signifiers that make Jumpin’ so damn impossible to sit still to, and a further argument in favour of DOSS and alternative dance music’s new queen of the dancefloor. Whoever she may actually be.
