Exclusive: Five Minutes with Gosh Pith

Gosh Pith have been making waves lately in the pop and electronic worlds for their eclectic music styles. Somehow catering to a wide variety of listening audiences, the duo team are planning to tour the US, and to prepare, we recently sat down to catch up with the boys.

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?

Doing well, I’m catching up on some emails and listening to tunes, josh freed is working our friend Tunde’s record.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

Ratchet, Concise. Drums, voice, synths, some guitar.

What are the 5 most influential albums that have influenced you the most?

Which other artists are you into at the moment and why?

We listen a lot, a lot a lot, Jessy Lanza is refreshing and hybrid, King Krule is raw and witty, we like all sorts of stuff, Travis Scott and Rae Sremmurd have some awesome melodies, Kurt Vile, Kali Uchis, its hard to say why, something in their sounds or tone pallets attracts us. Moodymann we always jam to. Really into A.CHAL right now too, love his vibe.

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you are using to define your sound?

Our voices, a 1991 fender strat, we work in ableton but that doesn’t mean too much.

What would you say some of the challenges artists face today in the music industry?

Being broke mostly is a challenge. Getting noticed I reckon is hard, same challenges as always though.

Where do you gather song writing inspiration?

Experiences, observations and relationships. We all need some sort of release or we will go mad. I write the songs very fluidly, it kind of just comes out and I recognize what I am saying a lot of times after the fact. I’ll hear a lyric a week or months later and be like “Oh yea, I was going through that at that time, that makes so much sense now.”

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when put music together?

It comes from all different ways, sometimes starts with a song I write on guitar and then we build a beat around it. Sometimes there is a beat and we build a song around that. Just depends on the spark.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?

We played on a rooftop in Brooklyn overlooking the manhattan skyline. It was really dope, Griz played and brass tracks sat in with us and jammed on our tune Window. We’ve had some awesome ones though that come to mind.

And the worst?

One time I got electrocuted in Toledo, it was super trip seeing white light but it wasn’t so serious.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?

A musician

Do you have any particular gigs or festivals that you dream about playing?

Glastonbury would be cool, or some festivals in other countries, to travel and meet all different kinds of people. MSG like Led Zeppelin in the song remains the same would be righteous too.

If you could perform alongside any other band or artist, who would it be?

That’s tough, probably Peter Green or Delroy wilson in their primes. Would be awesome to see J-dilla cook up a beat man that would be incredible!

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

We have a 2 week tour starting October 1st at Red Rocks and ending in Michigan on October 15th. We also have a full-length project coming out sometime this year that we are very excited about.
