Interview: Five Minutes with Eulene

Born in New York and currently based in Nashville,  Eulene released her debut single “Momma” late last year via GoGoLove Records and will soon be releasing her self-titled EP, mixed by Grammy-nominated Erik Madrid.

Growing up surrounded by creativity, Eulene’s parents shared a love for the arts, frequenting music festivals and teaching her songs by Hank Williams Sr and Bill Monroe. Her grandmother’s photography studio in Carnegie Hall inspired her to immerse herself in the works of Verushka, Bela Lugosi, and June Carter Cash, and Eulene eventually went on to graduate from the acting conservatory at SUNY Purchase while simultaneously studying classical voice.

We chatted to the New York-born electro-pop songstress in anticipation of her upcoming release and gained some insight into her creative process.

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

It was all I dreamed of and always yearned to learn more about since I can remember. And still do.

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

The idea might come from the sound first and the yet the sound can birth an idea too. So both.
I like to check out iTunes playlists to listen for anything new that might excite. Right now I’m listening to Halsey, Rose Royce, The Weeknd, Beyonce, Hank Williams.

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

Live performance and the energy of a show is a very personal connection – I feel my fans really relate to what I’m singing about and are in sync with me. Live shows are the power – where the music really resonates.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

Writing solely with a rhythm or groove. And I also love picking up an oddball instrument to try and write with.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

My favorite part of the process is recording. It’s so utterly exciting to tweak a song into its final shape. It’s intense and thrilling… Long days filled with unexpected turns.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do?”

I knew very clearly early in my childhood that I wanted to sing and perform. I performed in theatre and attended an acting conservatory before it became clear that I could direct my own show by merging my own dialogue with my own voice. At which point, I bought a guitar and sat with it for hours a day and began creating my own work.

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

Water. and when playing Bass, many many bass picks.

Any emerging artists on your radar?

Billie Eilish

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Listening to music of all kinds from different eras and genres.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

I’m not a gear-head.

How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?

I’d say by pushing myself out of my own comfort zones and exploring new boundaries when writing. For example, avoiding picking up a guitar to jam on it the way I typically default to. But rather being open to new possibilities for how a song can be created.

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

I have an exciting EP I’m thrilled to share with the world. Many fresh tracks and videos await.

Famous last words?

Be Inspired.
