Interview: Five Minutes with Sorsari
Sorsari is the name on everyone’s lips in the wave music community. With the rise of the wave music scene, Sorsari has been ahead every step of the way, pushing the limits of the genre with his ethereal synth-sounds and meticulous sampling work. With many feathers already perched in his proverbial cap, Sorsari has had frequent support from reputable publications Mixmag, Nest HQ, YourEDM and YouTube channel the_ accidental_poet. As the wave genre continues to grow, Sorsari remains indispensable to its sound evolution.
The talented musician has just announced his brand new EP, titled ‘Patterns’, which is slated for release on October 30 via prominent wave label vibe.digital Recordings and has premiered the first track off of the upcoming release, ’Monster’. Pre-save the ‘Patterns’ EP on Spotify here.

We caught up with Sorsari and chatted about doing what you love, surrounding yourself with like-minded people and being honest.
Set the tone for us. Why the arts?
Art is a tangible way of expressing and sharing feelings or emotions that are abstract and intangible.
Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?
The idea.
What’s on your current playlist?

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.
I feel like we’re all in this web that I’m able to connect everybody with. It’s a pleasure and I like to feel and reflect the energy that happens when I’m playing a show.
What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?
An equal amount of synthesis and sampling. I’m big into using NI Massive for almost all of my synths with a touch of Serum and Omnisphere but I like also like using vocal samples and foley art for atmospheric textures. I’m also into using video game sound effects from older final fantasy games to give it that magical flare.
Take us through a day in the recording studio.
Usually I’ll come home from work, settle down and then sit in my chair with Ableton ready to go along with some nice glasses of wine or beer depending on the mood to get the juices flowing. I like to start a song by opening up a VSTi and playing on my keyboard until I catch something that I feel like I want to lay down in the song while experimenting with the initialized patch to see if it will fit as a good patch for chords or leads. I’ve just recently been getting into hardware and I’m using my MOOG DFAM some more oddities in the tracks.
Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?
Probably when I was living in Vancouver from 2009-2012. I went to the Art Institute of Vancouver and I fell in love with the idea that this was something I could come home to every single day and feel joy from it. However I don’t see this as something I want to pursue as a career since I like to make music solely for the reason of it being meditative, expressive and a way to bring people together or out of a dark place that they’re stuck in.
What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?
A few drinks, a clock, and spare USBs.
Any emerging artists on your radar?
MRKRYL from Calgary, AB., Canada has been putting out music nonstop and constantly outdoing herself. She makes similar music and has her own sound that’s distinguishable from a lot of others, it’s really emotional with a lot of atmospheric detail and texture and it still has that driving reese bassline that gives it a lot of energy.
What gets your creative juices flowing?
Going to shows and hanging out with my friends on the weekends, surrounding myself with similar minded people who share the same passion as me.

Any side projects you’re working on?
Nothing at the moment.
How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?
I’ve adjusted my mentality and my intentions I guess. Before I just wanted a lot of recognition and validation for something I felt like I was good at but you could hear that the sound wasn’t very honest. I think I adjusted my approach to music production when I stopped caring about constantly playing big EDM shows or hitting big numbers or whatever and got more into making music from my heart that wasn’t very formulaic sounding.

Lots of collaborations with MRKRYL. Lots of new singles and EPs.
