Interview: Five Minutes with I AM SENTI

London based musician I AM SENTI released her single ‘Virgin Mojito’ via AST RECORDINGS, as well as sharing a deep house remix of the track. The original and remix were produced by I AM SENTI herself. For the master engineering and mixing of the song, she collaborated with The Dairy Studios (Jess Glynne, Faithless, Halsey). Her debut single ‘Not With Me’ has been streamed close to 2 million times on Youtube, her stream rate collectively across multiple platforms nears 4 million. She has been feautured in publications like VENTS Magazine, Female First, and Stereo Stickman. She has also received airplay from radio station KISS FM(London). We find out more about the singer, producer, and songwriter below. 

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

Music has always been my passion, and I love writing songs about love and relationships, as they are all based on my own personal experiences. I wanted to be an artist with a cloud of mystery and I have yet to reveal my true identity or face to my fans, which I believe allows for a stronger connection between my fans and my music lyrics.

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

The lyrics!! So the idea I guess..

Does your material feature any collaborations?

Yes, I have recently collaborated with a female artist from the US @Micki_Ronnae.

Micki Ronnae is an up-and-coming artist hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma who possesses many talents—she sings, dances, writes, raps, produces, and plays the drums. 

I also have an upcoming collaboration with an artist from Canada who will feature on my new release, which is planned to come out in April.

What’s on your current playlist?

Currently, I have a lot of old school songs from back in the day that includes Rihanna, Drake, Beyonce & MJ all mixed up with music from today’s UK Grime scene, which includes artists like Stormzy, Aitch and AJ Tracey.

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

I have never performed on stage as ‘I AM SENTI’.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

I work with a few different producers and each of them has kinda taught me to go with my gut feeling when experimenting in the studio. I want my fans to really connect and feel the music so if we can’t get that feeling in the studio, then I usually start working on something different until we get the right sound. One of the things I am passionate about is music you can dance to, hence why I like to work with Dance and House Music producers.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

I usually have three to four hours session booked in the music studio so I try to be as productive as I can during my time there. Therefore I prep myself before going to the studio with a full plan of action making sure I’m in the right mind frame to connect with the lyrics I write. I put a lot of trust into my producers to help guide me in as I am new to the music scene and industry.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

Yes! My first time in the recording booth I felt like I was at home and I didn’t want to leave the studio haha. I got a taste for recording music and I haven’t looked back since.

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

Friends and Family.

Any emerging artists on your radar?

Watch out for Allie Sherlock she’s absolutely amazing and I’ve been watching her journey for a while now, she’s definitely one to keep an eye on in the future.

What gets your creative juices flowing?

A coffee and a change of scenery always helps, but usually when I am with my friends in the studio we get really creative and bounce ideas off one another, and I’m so thankful that my friends help support me on my music journey.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

When I first started writing songs it was just me and my guitar, and a notepad, and pretty much nothing has changed. I tend to visit different studios in London to network and meet new people so from the tech perspective it’s always changing. Tech has evolved a lot over the last ten years in the music industry and I am always learning about new gear and software or plug-ins producers use.

Any side projects you’re working on?

I am currently working on completing my upcoming track ‘Worst in me’, and working on drafting the storyboard for the music video. I really want to make this my best song and  music video yet. #Staytuned

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

This year I am planning to release my next song ‘Worst in me’ followed by ‘Bully’, so I have been very busy music wise getting these two songs ready along with planning their music videos. My aim this year is to get my first live stage performance, that would be something I want to achieve in 2020, 100%!
