Interview: Five Minutes with Lycoriscoris

Born and raised in Japan, Yunosuke Senoo is the deep-house producer behind Lycoriscoris. His ambient, meditative sounds and rhythmic beats incorporate gently flowing organic elements with the world of electronic music, calling to mind the likes of Christian Loffler, Ben Bohmer and either Lane 8 or Yotto.

Having released his LP Chiyu in March  (the title meaning “recovery” or “healing” in Japanese)  we catch up with the young producer to reflect on his creative process:

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

It’s case by case. But more often than not, I create from sound. 

Does your material feature any collaborations?

Basically, I like to complete things on my own, so there is no collaboration.

What’s on your current playlist?

There are playlists for listening on drives and walks, and playlists for mixed reference.

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

There are many good things. Some fans even brought their drinks to the stage.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

I always try to imitate the sound of many cool artists, but I never reach the coolness of any of them, I always end up with something half-baked, which I think makes my sound original.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

It depends on the day. Some days I play jam sessions all day, some days I’m mixing all day.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

Yes.
