Interview: Five Minutes with Squire
Squire is one of the most interesting upcoming Spanish and international talents on the scene. His unique sound merges techno and house with an incredible variety of influences.
These days, the retired Formula 1 champion (Spain, 2008) has been working hard in the studio, additionally producing his own live stream series on Twitch—in addition to guest starring on a recent iteration of BLOND:ISH’s Abracadabra stream. The past month alone has seen records on Mobilee, Einmusika, and Voltaire.
Despite his young age, he has already released records on esteemed labels such as Get Physical, their sub label Kindisch, Crosstown Rebels sub label Rebellion, Audiofly’s Flying Circus Recordings, Behrouz’s Do Not Sit On The Furniture, My Favorite Robot Records, Sasse’s Moodmusic, Bar 25 Music, 3000 Grad Records and Earthly Delights.
The key to his success has been his complete focus and respect for music traditions, and a keen open eye to the future of electronic music. He is an artist with a bright future and no doubt many more special productions on the way, including releases on Lee Burridge All Day I Dream, Tale & Tone, Trybesof and Bedouin’s TrueColors.
Squire has an upcoming single, ‘Pretty Little Lies’, on All Day I Dream’s Summer Sampler out on the 21st of August. It’s his second go with the label, following his debut on the series one year ago.

Hey Jaime, thanks for your time.
Hi The Playground, happy to talk to you!
Looking back, what were some of your earliest entries into music appreciation? And music production?
I started in music just by coincidence…My parents took me to Ibiza from when I was 3 years old and we were going there every summer. I literally made all my friends in there and guess what? Every one of my friends was into music and playing records at home. I was only interested in sports at first but then I was always helping them out setting up monitors, turntables, records here and there so I ended up giving it a try and as you can see now I kind of liked it :).
I thought playing records is cool but what about producing the music that you play? I thought there was a universe of creativity and opportunity behind that, a much wider option than just deejaying.
What made you decide to pursue a musical career?
The love of making music. I don’t think there’s anything else as rewarding as creating music.
Please tell us more about how ‘Pretty Little Lies’ came together.
My friend Kamel came home to show me some of his music and unfinished projects he had…We were going through and all of a sudden I heard this melody in the background…I told him to send me that midi stem because I really felt what we could do for it, so we literally build the track in 3 hours. One of those magic moments in the studio when everything comes together so quick.. it doesn’t happen frequently really…
What key pieces of gear/software are you using to define your sound?
I try to use different stuff every time so I might get something unexpected which at the end is my target on making music, being surprised by something new and awkward. I like using samples and playing with them, I love using the voyager and playing around its parameters, and some effect pedals too like Keinedelay, or some weird distortion..
Is there any aspect of production or music that you are currently working on or studying further?
I’m starting to study advanced harmony, counterpoint , composition and orchestration.
Are there any key non-musical influences on your sound and creative process?
Not really, a lot of work and hours sitting in the studio 🙂
Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you in the near future?
I’m really excited to be releasing quite a lot of music I’ve been doing during last winter and the lockdown. It’s been very challenging to reach the sound I wanted to achieve but I’m actually very excited and happy to present it. There’s an EP coming on Einmusika early September, another EP on Mobilee, one on Do not Sit on The Furniture… I’m also starting my own imprint which I’m really looking forward to, so I’ll be putting out the first release on my own with a very special remix. There’s also great stuff confirmed for 2021! Stay tuned it’s going to be super exciting 🙂
Thanks Jaime!
Thank you guys! My pleasure.
