Interview: Five Minutes with Da Capo

Hailing all the way from Polokwane, Limpopo, Nicodimas Sekheta Mogashoa or better known as Da Capo has made a name for himself in the Afro-house scene. Da Capo has from a very young age already taken a lot of inspiration from legends in the industry until he was ready to hone his own unique sound. A sound that’s taken his career into household name status in South Africa.

Da Capo kindly took a few moments to talk to us about what drives him as an artist, the sequel to his Indigo Child album and the emotional reacts his audience has to his music.

 

How would you personally describe your sound? And how would you say it’s evolved over the years?

I think I’m a versatile producer but my sound stays within Afro with elements or sounds that represent where I’m from Africa. I don’t think my sound has evolved much either but the quality and technique has changed for the better.

 

Who would you say are your artists to work with so far?

My favourite artists that I would like to work with are Msaki, Lady Zamar and Kususa.

 

Are there any genres you’ve come across that you would still like to incorporate into your own music somehow or perhaps a genre-crossover you might want to do eventually?

Yes, I’ve been a fan of Electro/Techno for years and I have been producing songs which are Afro and a play of Techno.

 

Could you tell us a bit about the artists who inspired you to start making music in the first place?

Artists like Jimpster, Nick Holder, Quinton Harris just to name a few played a big role in inspiring me.

 

Who would you say is your biggest competition in the game right now?

There are a lot of really good producers out there but I believe I am my own competition.

 

Is there anything about the current developments in African music that excites you?

Yes, our sound is recognised internationally now, its rapidly growing on people and the world is open to it now.

 

Please explain what the overall experience is like at your live shows.

It’s incredible to see how much love people at the shows, it inspires me so much. Even how people react to exclusive music, it’s the best feeling ever.

 

What has been your favourite city/venue that you have performed at during your travels?

Has to be Brooklyn (New York) at Output club, the atmosphere and the energy was amazing there.

 

Has there been any night in particular that stands out for you both as a powerful memory on stage?

I’ve witnessed people crying during my sets, this started out in 2013 and gotten more frequent with time. It reminds me just how powerful music is.

 

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or shows in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

I’m currently working on Indigo Child part 2 and some remixes.

 

Any last thoughts you would like to leave with your fans?

You’ve got to always believe in yourself before anything else, not to impress others. Do it for yourself and God.
