Interview: We have a strange chat with Iglooghost

Brainfeeder Records has always found its stronghold in celebrating the dark, manic corners of the electronic underworld, but even we aren’t sure if we’ve chatted with anyone quite as eccentric as UK artist IGLOOGHOST. Part Casper the friendly ghost and part mad scientist, the graphic designer/producer is the result of music in the millennial age.

We chat with the young artist about his upcoming LP, his artwork, and much more!

Hey Iglooghost, thanks for taking the time to chat with us! We hear you’re in uni now, but you’ve still got that kid-vibe in your aesthetic. Does Iglooghost ever grow up?! What are Iglooghost’s biggest dreams and goals?

HAHA I DROPPED OUT AFTER LIKE A MONTH CUS I DON’T WANNA HAVE TO MAKE HALF-DECENT MUSIC & HALF-DECENT SCHOOLWORK. MY BIGGEST GOAL RN IS TO MOVE IN TO A TINY FLAT & BUY POTTED PLANTS.

We hear that you used to make fake band covers and write down titles to fake songs with features from dream guests. Have you been able to make any of them come to life yet? Who are some dream artists you’d love to work with (either in graphic design or music)

HEHEH YEAH THAT’S TRUE! YEH I’VE DEFINITELY CROSSED A FEW PPL OFF MY BIG MASTER-LIST. IT DEFINITELY CHANGES W/ TIME THO. I’M IN THIS HEADSPACE RN WHERE I WANNA DO AS MUCH AS I CAN ON MY OWN. ACTUALLY I SORTA WANNA MAKE COLLAB ALBUMS WITH WEIRD MATH-ROCK BANDS.

We hear that you used to throw your tapes up on stage to hopefully catch Flying Lotus’ attention. Were there any other clever methods you had to try to slip artist’s your music?

YEH THAT SHIT WAS WEAK LMAO. I WAS 15 MAKING CRAPPY CRAP & FOR SOME REASON I WANTED PPL TO HEAR IT. I THINK THERE’S A POINT WHERE U REALISE VALIDATION FROM PPL U LOOK UP TO ISN’T EVEN IMPORTANT & I WISH I REALISED THAT EARLIER. IT’S SO MUCH MORE FULFILLING TO JUST EXPLORE THE DEEPEST MUSICAL CREVICES OF UR OWN BRAIN THAN TO SPEND TIME HUSTLING ON DA INTERNET & NETWORKING OR WHATEVER. OR AT LEAST THAT’S WHERE I’M AT NOW. MUSICAL SOLOPSISM OR SOME SHIT. I PLAN ON EMERGING BACK OUT OF MY OWN BUTT AT SOME POINT, BUT I’M JUST SEEING WOT IT DO RN.

Your music hits fast, arrives maniacally, and contains a hell of a lot of samples. What have become some of your favorite things to sample thus far?Listening to your earlier work, what has changed from then until now?

YO I NEVER RLLY USE SAMPLES ANYMORE. DON’T THINK I RLLY HAVE FOR A COUPLE YEARS. BUT THAT’S DOPE THAT U THOUGHT I DO. IMO ONE OF THE FUNNEST THINGS ABOUT LISTENING TO MUSIC IS WHEN THERE ARE SOUNDS THAT ARE RLLY DIFFICULT TO PIN DOWN & FIGURE OUT WHERE THEY CAME FROM.

You’ve started a band called Pyong Yang. What can you tell us about it thus far? Was there a reason you decided to separate this from your work under Iglooghost?

HAHA YEH. I GUESS THAT’S MORE OF A THERAPUTIC THING SO I DON’T GO MAD MAKING MY ALBUM. I GOT A MILLION SOUNDS BLASTING INTO MY EARS FOR ALL OF MY WAKING HOURS, SO SOMETIMES I JUST TRY & PLAY A GUITAR OR MAKE RAP SONG OR SOMETHING AT NIGHT. DUMPING SHIT ON A SECRET SOUNDCLOUD IS SO FUN. THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NO PRESSURE & U CAN UPLOAD THE CRAPPIEST SHIT. MAD LETHARGIC.

In terms of your graphic design, people heavily know your aesthetic, what are your ultimate goals with your work? Is there a ‘signing to brainfeeder’ equivalent of the graphic design world?

MAN I DEFFO FEEL LIKE I’VE ONLY JUST SCRATCHED THE SURFACE W/ THE VISUALS. I’M SPENDING ALL MY TIME RN MAKING NOISES BUT I’M BOUT TO GO CRAAAZY WITH THE PICTURES THE SECOND I’M FINISHED WITH THE LP’S MUSIC. I RLLY RLLY WANNA FULLY ELABORATE ON THIS WORLD I BEEN CONCOCTING IN MY HEAD. IT’S FRUSTRATING IN A WAY CUS RN, NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THERE’S GONNA BE LIKE COMIC STRIPS & VIDEOS & SO MUCH STUFF. I WANNA MAKE LIL TOYS IF I CAN TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Thanks Iglooghost for the chat! Purchase Chinese Nu Year via iTunes.
