Lauryn Hill responds to Robert Glasper’s accusations of ‘stealing music’ and more in online essay
Written by Maya-Rose Torrão
Yesterday, pop icon Lauryn Hill shared a public essay online, in the hopes of addressing recent accusations made by acclaimed pianist and producer Robert Glasper. Robert Glasper called out Lauryn Hill for ‘stealing music’, mistreating fellow artists and more, surrounding the recording and touring of ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ on a radio interview with Houston radio station KBXX, which you can read more about here.
Hill puts down a portion of Glasper’s accusations regarding the way that she treated the band as miscommunication, and explains in her essay:
“The Miseducation was the first time I worked with musicians outside of the Fugees who’s report and working relationship was clear. In an effort to create the same level of comfort, I may not have established the necessary boundaries and may have been more inviting than I should have been. In hindsight, I would have handled it differently for the removal of any confusion. And I have handled it differently since, I’m clear and I make clear before someone walks in the door what I am and am not looking for. I may have been inclusive, but these are my songs.”
In the public essay, Hill also addressed her stance on racial injustice, her personal struggles around the time of her MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 album, and her live performances. The 20th anniversary tour ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ saw a string of postponed dates, but will be resumed next month as planned.
