London Club Plastic People closes

A few weeks back we almost witnessed the closure of London’s Fabric. We rejoiced when we heard that its doors would remain firmly open. However it seems that where one club stands, another falls.

Having served over 10 years in the game, Plastic People is to shut its doors forever.

The team behind the Shoreditch venue have confirmed that they will not re-open for 2015. The owners haven’t divulged an official reason why, however club manager Charlotte Kepel simply stated that “it felt right to move on.” This announcement came as a huge shock to the scene. Despite having a run in with Hackney Council and having their license reviewed back in 2010 (to prevent “public nuisance”) the club was not on the ‘critical list.’

Plastic People originally began in Oxford but relocated to Shoreditch in 2000. The venue may be small and dark but it soon gained a healthy reputation due to its world famous Soundsytem. Some of the top DJ’s have held spots down there, from Theo Parrish, Four Tet, to current resident Floating Points. The club also played host to the mighty Dubstep and Grime night FWD>>. The weekly event was a melting pot for the UK bass movement and Plastic People became home for one of London’s last great scenes.

Plastic People ended with a party for ‘family and friends’ with a line up featuring, Floating Points, Benny Blanco, Abdul Forsyth and more.

For lovers of nightlife this news was not a great start to 2015, especially with the truly savage culls of London’s clubs we’ve encountered over the year just gone. It really does paint a worrying picture of what the future might hold….
