A statement from SOPHIE’s representative
It is with great sadness to say goodbye to one of the most incredible artists to grace the music industry, SOPHIE. The 34 year old avant-pop musician passed away on Saturday January 30th, with the confirmation of death due to an accidental fall. SOPHIE was living in Athens, Greece and in a statement from labels Future Classic and Transgressive, they wrote:
True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us.
The news of SOPHIE’s death has shocked the music industry and we are deeply saddened to lose such a skilled, talented and overall incredible human being who broke the boundaries of what it means to be a creative, to live your life unapologetically as who you truly are – to allow no one to hold you back and to break the mould of what is expected of you from society.
Massive amounts of tributes have poured in from artists across the world in remembrance of the late artist. Pitchfork have also written an in-depth article regarding SOPHIE’s take on music, gender identity and futurism that is poignant and insightful.

Thinking about the last time I saw Sophie in France. I remember her getting off stage as I was going on. She was wearing patent leather. I never remember what anyone was wearing but I remember that and how beautiful she was in every way.

Sophie was a stellar producer, a visionary, a reference. She rebelled against the narrow, normative society by being an absolute triumph, both as an artist and as a woman. I can’t believe she is gone. We need to honor and respect her memory and legacy. Cherish the pioneers. pic.twitter.com/3kyRl1KabY
