[Premiere & Interview]: Five Minutes with RAFMAN
RAFMAN, a DJ and producer from Lisbon, Portugal, has just shared his latest dance-infused electronic single, ‘Put Your Records On’. Officially released tomorrow, the 29th of May, the track stands as a triumph against the “test of creativity” that COVID-19 has put many artists under.
The producer has received recognition from the TREND MUSIC AWARDS with the Upcoming Artist Award marking him as one to watch. Fortunately, other musicians are recognising RAFMAN for his worth as he has had the opportunity to share a stage with the likes of Alesso, Axwell, Dimitri Vegas, Galantis as well as Martin Garrix and his previously released single, ‘Wayside’ is currently sitting at nearly 700 000 plays on Spotify alone.
Curious about this rising producer? We were too. Find out all you need to know in the interview below.
Set the tone for us. Why the arts?
I have always been passionate about music. All my life I’ve been connected to music. I had a band where I was the drummer and my passion for electronic music came to life when I was 18 years old.
Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?
For me, every piece of music starts with an idea, then it’s all about creativity and hard work on production.
Does your material feature any collaborations?
Yes, I am working on a lot of songs with several artists and songwriters. I also have a new project called Dukeboys!
What’s on your current playlist?
I really like hearing Diplo’s playlist because I identify myself on it, also Fresh Finds or Swag House from Spotify.
Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.
I love being on stage because I can express myself and I always have good chemistry with the crowd. What I like most is interacting with them.
What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?
I don’t have any specific technique, I think you have to be yourself, and be original. You can always find an inspiration, which is what I do.
Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?
I don’t think I can do anything else (ahahah).
What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?
My iPhone to capture some the best moments.
What gets your creative juices flowing?
Don’t stop creating music. Creativity will eventually appear.
Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.
Logic, Ableton and a keyboard.
Any side projects you’re working on?
Yes, Dukeboys a new project with a friend of mine Bruno Mota, a huge producer. He has a lots of credits with a major artists like Pusha-T and Gentleman.
How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?
I have improved by listening to new and different grooves.
Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?
This year will not be easy, but I will give what I always gave, a lot of music.
