[PREMIERE] Firewoodisland ‘One with the Mountain’

By: Niki van den Heever

Riding on the success of their previous single ‘Storm’, which hit over 150k plays on Spotify since its release. ‘Storm’ has also recently been added to Spotify’s ‘Most beautiful songs in the world’ playlist and ‘Lost in the woods’ playlist. Firwoodisland premieres their latest single ‘One with the Mountain’ at home, The Playground on Friday 17 May.

The duo describes their sound as ‘Mountain-Pop’ and it’s no wonder seeing as both Stian Vedøy and Abi Eleri were born and raised in mountain countries. Abi being from North Wales, where her artistic upbringing, drove her to the trumpet, guitar and songwriting in general from a very young age. Whereas Stian hails from the land of Vikings, Karmøy, Norway where his own passion for music drove him to study music production. Firewoodisland (a direct translation of Stian’s last name) now reside in Bristol where their paths just naturally led them.

Together the two created a sound that is unlike any other. It is the marriage of traditional folk and sometimes almost medieval style vocals, as demonstrated in ‘Storm’ with high modern production that somehow makes the entire project just seem so organic and pure. ‘One with the Mountain’ follows in that vein, though Abi takes lead vocals on this one, the song carries a very personal tie to both artists… but also contains a social message, as explained by the duo themselves: “One with the Mountain’ has a double meaning. On the one hand, it is inspired by growing up surrounded by nature; how that is a place of solace and escapade, a place to hide from the world. On the other hand, it is a call to see the importance of our planet, being the first generation to know the full extent of the damage we are causing, it motivates us to think about our actions and take responsibility for our little portion.”
