Q+A: 5 minutes with The Toxic Avenger

Usually a fixture in the Synthwave space, Billboard-featured producer and Enchanté Records signee The Toxic Avenger has veered off in a new direction. His latest release, titled ‘Mine’ is a high-energy House record inspired by the work of British producer Fred Again... Spearheading the project, the track features on a new extended version of his album Yes Future, which contains 8 additional tracks, adding to the collection of synth-riddled records. Notably, the new version has already earned the support of recognised tastemaker Run The Trap. Let’s have a chat with him:

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

Probably the sound!

Does your material feature any collaborations?

Not on my new extended LP.

What’s on your current playlist?

Algerian funk rai from the ‘80s and old Mogwai records and some Helmet songs (I use to be a big fan of Aftertaste).

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

I kind of feel weird being the centre of attention onstage.

I have a love/ hate relationship with live shows.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

I love working with old Cassette tapes as a rudimentary sampler.

I’m making a tape loop, recording stuff on it, and sampling it afterwards.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

Everybody will tell you romantic stuff about the studio. Truth is: it’s 50% being online watching silly videos until something cool happens.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

Yes, and I think once you’ve felt that, you’re constantly running toward that feeling again.

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

Sparkling water.

Any emerging artists on your radar?

  1. I fell in love with Charif Megarbane.
  2. Super moody Ambient, abstract, Arabic songs.

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Hope.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

I always have my Juno 106 and my SH 101 close to me; they’re like the alpha and omega of my music.

Any side projects you’re working on?

Yes, I’m always working on side projects that will never be released. I’m working on ambient music, a project called “musique pour mon chien” for example.

Break down the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

I want my music to evolve again and again.

Famous last words?

C’etait bien.
