Q&A with Russian producer and DJ, Chertkovski

We sat down with Bali-based Russian producer and DJ Chertkovski has unveiled his latest track, ‘Miracle’, on March 15th, 2024 via Reverse Universe. En route to becoming one of Russia’s most unique electronic music exports, Chertkovski is constantly in the spotlight and has been touring the world for years, with his music racking up over 2 million listens across platforms. He has received strong support from artists (Nora En Pure, NTO, and Vintage Culture, among others) and popular publications and radio stations such as DJ Mag, Mixmag, and Tomorrowland One World Radio amongst others. He has performed at legendary night clubs and festivals, boasting an array of regional and international tours. He founded Reverse Festival in early 2021, which has included appearances from NTO, Einmusik, Korolova, Sam Shure, YokoO, Rafael Cerato and The Organism, to name but a few. Influenced by the likes of Township Rebellion, NTO, Eelke Kleijn, Cassian, Mind Against and Colyn, his particular flavour of melodic house is sure to be enjoyed by fans of Artbat, Camelphat, 8KAYS and Avoure.

 

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

Art is about manifestation, freedom, your own views and the whole world is your home. Impressions and new acquaintances.

 

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

Of course it’s honouring these two qualities. Idea and realisation, but it is better to have your own idea and others can realise it too.

 

Does your material feature any collaborations? 

Not now, but in the past there have been.

 

What’s on your current playlist?

More than 60% is made up of my compositions.

 

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

Style Offset, trying something new creativity is an experiment and that’s how my music is born.

Nothing out of the ordinary, just generally just fascinated by the process.

 

Any emerging artists on your radar?

I don’t follow emerging artists much.

 

What gets your creative juices flowing?

New achievements, the stage, emotions, and of course people.

 

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

Laptop, headphones and Ableton, and I finish my work at the studio – sometimes the team helps me with it.

 

Any side projects you’re working on?

My own Reverse Festival, and I have a DJ school and third-party business.

 

How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?

As I said earlier, diligence and experimentation.

 

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

There will be about 6 releases and several collaborations! This year will also focus on touring activities.
