Róisín Murphy – The Universe
Róisín Murphy, known for her unique and groundbreaking style, has just announced her highly anticipated upcoming album, Hit Parade, produced in collaboration with electronic music virtuoso and longtime friend, DJ Koze. Describing Hit Parade, Murphy explains that it is the result of a remote collaboration with DJ Koze spanning several years. Despite being physically apart in different countries, they exchanged tracks and ideas, creating a virtual studio between Hamburg and London. This unique approach allowed both artists to work privately and intimately, fostering a deeper connection to the music. Murphy poured her secrets into the album, while Koze experienced total freedom and focus, resulting in vibrant and lively music bursting with colour that shifts from Murphy’s previous disco synth pop sound.
The Universe, the new single from the album, possesses a captivating and almost oceanic sway. The track features gentle guitar melodies and a meandering electric piano, with Murphy’s unmistakable voice dancing and intertwining with the beat. The overall arrangement creates an atmosphere of playful psychedelia, bathing the listener in its sun-drenched soundscapes. Oh, and there’s a ‘Row Row Row Your Boat’ interpolation. According to Murphy, The Universe captures the playful yet terrifying nature of the vast cosmos. It emphasises the incomprehensible layers and stories unfolding in ways we can’t perceive or understand.
