Roundup, April #2

From bubblegum bass to euphoric disco-house, we roundup our favourite tracks of the week. Listen below.

Romy – Enjoy Your Life

The XX’s Romy has often turned to euphoric eurodance and trance for her solo material, and latest single Enjoy Your Life is no exception, while bringing a touch of disco into the fold. There’s something endearingly corny about the track’s uplifting refrain ‘my mother says to me, enjoy your life,’ sung as a breathy, eye-rolling call to arms.

SONIKKU – Twisted

After their previously muddled Enter The Chat, bubblegum bass’s most dedicated student SONIKKU sort of returns to form with the bouncy, plastic fantastic glitter bomb of Twisted, though the continued choice to prominently feature guest vocalists and MCs, this time Terror Jr, leaves SONIKKU’s recent work lacking the sense of attack that made tracks like Lifestyle so addictive.

Chase Icon – Club Cooter: Reloaded

Chase Icon is severely underrated. Sure, at first glance it’s difficult to take her So-Cal pop party girl veneer as anything more than surface level, but that’s what makes Icon so brilliant. She’s both parody and performance art, and Club Cooter: Reloaded distils everything that makes Icon, well, an icon into a single track: a scuzzy house beat, provocative lyrics, and of course, Icon’s deliciously ditzy-or-medicated delivery.

Shygirl – Crush

Unlike previously released new track Playboy / Positions which plunged Shygirl back into the grime of the underground, the latest new song from the London rapper and singer’s deluxe edition of her debut album returns to Nymph’s original palette of whimsical 2000’s guitar pop and butterfly charm bracelets. Crush is a delightfully cutesy piece of dreampop, with Erika de Casier melting perfectly into Shygirl’s ethereal universe.
