Interview: Five minutes with Ro Bergman

Austrian indie-rock musician Ro Bergman has just released his latest single, ‘Clouds’ via Bergman Music on the 16th of August. His previous single, ‘Horizon’ was released earlier this year with the music video, set in the bold  Wadi Rum Desert of Jordan. The prolific indie-rock sensation is an avid traveller and we see this appreciation for other cultures come through within the music video.

The ambient single, ‘Clouds’ is written to reflect the life experiences we all encounter in life, much as clouds reflect the atmospheric changes they go through. Ro Bergman manages to create a sense of comfort from the beginning of the single, using his voice to harmonise with the music and carrying one back to the hums of childhood as they were sung to sleep.

Following these releases, we got a chance to sit down with the mind behind the music.

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

Music from my childhood onwards inspired me.

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

The sound will come first to me, followed by the idea.

Does your material feature any collaborations?

Yes, I worked with Ramon Riezouw for the single, ‘Clouds’.

What’s on your current playlist?

I’m currently listening to a range of people, including The National, Beck, Bon Iver and John Lennon.

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

If there is an exchange of energy, it’s pure magic that is happening.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

I write most of the songs on my acoustic guitar or the piano. Followed by mixing organic sounds with electronic sounds. Finally, it’s reducing the song to the core to find out what’s really necessary for the track.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

It’s totally different every time – trying to be open – trying to get to the core.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

When I was at the first concert in my hometown in Salzburg for Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young.

As a musician, when I played the first concert with my band at 13 years old.

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

I had a favourite T-shirt… I thought it brings luck – it’s already quite used now – but I would never throw it away.

Any emerging artists on your radar?

Pressyes

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Different places and vibes, travelling and Jack and Coke.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

I tend to work in the studios, along with special instruments.

Any side projects you’re working on?

I’m currently focusing on my development as Ro Bergman.

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

The EP, New Horizon and an upcoming tour in Autumn.

Famous last words?

Remind yourself that this life is short – dream outside the lines.
