Q+A: 5 Minutes with sweeep

Enigmatic producer sweeep first arrived on our radar a little over 3 years ago as she released the single, ‘Realize’ accompanied by a Loneliness remix. At the time, we sat down for an exclusive interview with her in which we explored the artist’s complex production style. In the following years, we watched the artist grow, collecting millions of views and earning herself a place in well-known publications. Which is why it was such a joy when resurfaced once more with the release of her latest single, ‘crise’, taken from her upcoming album wake up before u die slated for release on the 15th of April via Sonical Dior

Hi sweeep, thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions about your latest single. What genre would you classify ‘crise’ as, and does this set the tone for the rest of the album?

I don’t know much about genres and I never intend to produce a specific genre, so hard question. Crise is just a rising melody and breaks out with some experimental drums. It’s an intro for the album so the rest of the songs are a bit longer. They might also differ a bit in style. Some are more like dark ambient and some are a bit harder with experimental beats.

You mentioned that this track was mixed with a previous recording you created years before. What other elements come into play when you create your sound?

I have always been drawn to heavy bass sounds. I also like to make a thick texture of different field recordings, some melodies and maybe some diffuse reverberant vocals and drums.

Which songs are you most excited about unveiling on your forthcoming album? 

All of them together

What made you want to pursue a career in music?

I never planned to pursue a career, I just started to create from interest and then what happend, happend! Sometimes I push myself out of my comfort zone and make effort because otherwise I get bored and I want to feel that life is moving forward. 

What do you love the most about doing live performances?

Meeting people like my listeners and other artists! 

What type of music are you currently listening to in your free time?

I have a broad taste but am still kinda specific! I like to check out new releases. Otherwise, I have my go-to playlists for different moods, like dark ambient, experimental, german rap, hip hop or some nostalgic epic y2k music like for example L’Amour Toujours by Gigi D’Agostino. 

How has the impact of the pandemic affected you as a creative?

I’ve been DJing less which has been giving more time to explore my productions. I sing a lot on the new stuff I’m working on at the moment, which I haven’t done much before.

If you weren’t a musician what else would you be doing as a career?

I have a few occupations already, I work as a designer, running the art collective Sonical Dior, making videos and I’m a certified yoga teacher. But it can’t replace making music. I think only something else related to music that is also expressive can. Maybe I would be a dancer. I was dancing a lot (popping, locking, ballet, contemporary and hip hop) before I started to produce music. 

What is your current favourite, instruments/gear you use to make your music?

I always use one new for each album and when I’m done with it I sell it. On my next album that I work on now I just use software and a Shure Beta 58-A microphone.

What has been the most memorable experience for you so far as a music producer?

All the bigger life-changing events that I know wouldn’t happen if I didn’t make music. It was because of music I moved to New York for a few months and I met many of my best friends through music.
