The Blessed Madonna, Todd Edwards – F*** What You Heard
“It’s sort of everyone’s dream to work with Todd Edwards, right?” Those are the sentiments of London-based dance producer, The Blessed Madonna, when asked about her recent collaboration with the legendary producer and vocalist whose voice was a staple on 90’s dance tracks. The Blessed Madonna has been on a roll lately with a series of collaborative singles like Serotonin Moonbeams with Uffie and We Still Believe with Jamie Principle. Now, she’s adding the cheekily titled Fuck What You Heard with Edwards to her streak.
For those unfamiliar with Edwards, his chopped-up vocal samples were a massive influence on dance music from the 90s and onwards. He even lent his voice to Daft Punk tracks like Face To Face and Fragments Of Time. Daft Punk recently shared studio audio from their sessions that produced the latter. Now, he returns to the mic for The Blessed Madonna, and it’s a banger. The track features a blend of Edwards’ original vocals and the familiar sample of What Goes Around, the UK garage classic that Ray Hurley released in 1999. Through her sample choices, The Blessed Madonna shows her appreciation for UK garage elements and hitherto her collaborator, while still staying true to her dancefloor ready, bass-heavy house music signature style. The track is a welcome testament to the timelessness of Edwards’ influence, even next to the ostensible pop star that is The Blessed Madonna.
