Thom Yorke releases new album as BitTorrent ‘experiment’

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has released his first solo material since 2006’s The Eraser.

In typically innovative style, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes was released via a new version of BitTorrent, allowing fans to download a free bundle, which includes the single ‘A Brain in a Bottle’ and its accompanying video, or choose to pay £3.68 in order to receive the full album.

Written by Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich, a press release announcing the album described the release as an “experiment,” going on to explain: “If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work.”

“Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves.”

“Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers. If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.”

NME has reported that 116,000 users had downloaded the free ‘A Brain in a Box’ bundle in the first 24 hours of its release, while the BitTorrent page is currently listing download totals at almost 400,000.

Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes can be purchased in either BitTorrent or vinyl format from tomorrowsmodernboxes.com.
