Tourist – Avalanche
U.K producer William Edward Phillips (AKA Tourist) came out the other side of a lockdown enforced hiatus a changed man. Having experienced states of isolation and loss like never before, the past two years have broken and reshaped Tourist into a stronger, wiser version of himself. This is not a conjecture. It’s all there, in the music. Avalanche, the second single off his forthcoming album Inside Out, follows the breathtaking Your Love as another melan-euphoric piece of dance music, programmed toward the heights of catharsis.

Building itself around a pitched vocal sample (surprise, it’s an archive Ellie Goulding sample!), sunny arpeggios and glowing, nostalgic drones grow in sentiment under a propulsive UKG beat and thrumming bass. A strummed shamisen-like string refrain peers in and out, brightness against the icy modulations of Tourist’s bulbous bass sounds. Simultaneously heartbreaking and full of impossible joy, Avalanche follows on from Your Love as a means for Tourist to unravel the complicated experience of grief and rebirth in stunning detail. This is some of the most heartfelt music he’s ever put out, and we are all the better for it.
