TP Mix #144 – Vitalic
Leaving us on cloud nine with part 1 of his fifth studio album DISSIDÆNCE, music producer Vitalic has now shared the second chapter of this expansive exploration of electronica and techno via Clivage Music. Today, we are pleased to share an exclusive mix from this electronic music powerhouse that blurs the conventional landscape. In celebration of releasing this latest work, and the fact that live music is slowly returning, Vitalic has also announced a live performance in Paris for the 12th of March. Until the big event, we are mesmerized by Vitalic’s musicality and ability to merge disco, rock, techno and electronic into one powerhouse and distinct sound experience on this latest mix.
Enjoy the mix below:
Set the tone for us. Why the arts?
I didn’t choose! I was born this way.
Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?
Usually, the idea comes before I start the song but I let things happen.
Does your material feature any collaborations?
Kiddy Smile on this LP but I mostly make my own vocals, turning my voice into a female voice when required.
What’s on your current playlist?
EBM stuff, Italian’70s music, Italo and hypnotic techno.
Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.
I am not a show-off. It’s all about fluidity and energies.
What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?
Sound instability and granularity.
Take us through a day in the recording studio.
I work early in the morning and late in the evenings. There is no routine but I prefer to make technical stuff in the morning while focusing on creativity and melodies in the night. My studio is in Paris under my apartment, so I go anytime I want. It’s dark with black walls and there is no window so I can totally focus on music for hours.
Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?
At the age of 6, I asked my mom what would be the music of the future, and she replied it would be electronic. I decided at that precise moment it was what I would do later.
What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?
A vodka cola and my cigs.
Any emerging artists on your radar?
Poltergeist. He is signed on my label Citizen Records and he is about to release a great album.
What gets your creative juices flowing?
Anything from movies, to sensations, reading or travelling.
Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.
I love my GRP A4 – an Italian synthesiser. I also use Sequential Pro III a lot. Pigments is a great software for textures. Hydra ASM is a very complex piece of equipment; I also have 2 Buchlas for experimentations.
Any side projects you’re working on?
I have a band called Kompromat and I also make music with a Tunisian singer Emel. I just finished a track with – ‘I Hate Models’
How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?
I change my sounds for each album. I try to never do the same LP twice, even though you can still recognise my sound.
Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?
I am finally starting to tour again after 2 years of stop and go. I have the second episode of my album DISSIDAENCE being released and also 2 movie soundtracks.
